Wild Ginger

"Asarum canadense" commonly called Canadian wild ginger, is in the family Aristolochiaceae. Culinary ginger purchased in grocery stores is a member of the family Zingiberaceae. Wild ginger is a lovely native ground cover that needs moist shade. The flowers are hidden beneath the foliage and one must part the leaves and practically lie on the ground to see them, certainly to photograph them. So I picked a specimen from our garden and brought it into my studio to get this shot of the amazing flower.
