Vanessa on Eupatorium

This butterfly is nectaring on a native plant commonly called tall boneset or tall thoroughwort. This plant is a member of the daisy family, but the small flowers are not typical-looking daisies. For plant nerds, the flowers are lacking ray florets. Abundant blooms are an important food source for pollinators in late summer and the flowers have an amazing fragrance! Butterfly: "Vanessa" sp., family Nymphalidae; plant "Eupatorium altissimum", family Asteraceae.
